Friday Throwback - Around The Way Girl
Your man LL Cool J was only in his early twenties and he was already on the verge of becoming a has been. Rap fans were turning their backs on him after Walking With A Panther, his third CD that was deemed overly commercial and recorded too much for the ladies. Double L rocked the bells with his fourth CD and he said it wasn’t a comeback. He’s been here for years. Mama Said Knock You Out is his greatest work and this song was his second single. Though it was the type of song that people turned their backs on him for, this one was different. It had just enough street savvy, was a pop hit, and it was an ode to the girls from around the way.
- I need that hat.
- What’s up with LL dancing?
- And dancing with the white girl in the overalls?
- Much like LL, I want a girl with extensions in her hair, bamboo earrings at least two pair.
- Live, he would change the lyric, “It really doesn’t matter as long as you’re in them,” to “It really doesn’t matter as long as I get in them.” That LL.
- The only Lisa, Pamela, Angela, and Rene that I’ve ever met weren’t from around the way.
- Isn’t that one girl from the early days of BET?
Though LL has many trademark songs, I’m not sure if there is one song that he’s done that people remember the lyrics to most than this one. You can take your I Need Love, your Big Ole Butt, your Loungin’ remix, your Doin’ It, your Hey Lover, and your Headsprung (ok, I’m joking with that last one), and throw them all the way because from the stand point of the one track that everyone can rap to, this one takes the cake.
Damn dude. I can recite every word to this freakin’ song. (sigh)…remember when LL was good?? That said, I’m glad he decided against dancing in any future videos.
