Where "My Crazy Life" Happens

Super Bowl XLIII – Steelers vs. Cardinals

Posted on | February 1, 2009 | 4 Comments

Before we get to the play by play, here’s a few things of note.

For some reason, Kurt Warner won the Walter Payton Man Of The Year Award.

Faith Hill is singing one of the more bland versions of America The Beautiful in history.

Jennifer Hudson blew the National Anthem out of the water. She should sing it at every event. Better than Whitty Houton.

John Elway looked about 20 years older than Roger Craig.

1st Quarter

14:08 – Big Benjamin finds Hines Ward for a huge gain and they’re already in Arizona territory. Hines looked slow, but was open.

12:09 – Big Ben to Heath and the ball is at the one yard line.

11:28 – Gary Russell was stopped for a loss. Whoever had Russell scoring the first touchdown of the game was really happy, and then terribly sad.

10:00 – Big Benjamin rolled out on a bootleg and scored a touchdown. His lineman dragged him into the end zone and his knee might’ve been down right before the goal line. (The reason I keep tying Big Ben is so I don’t have to type out his last name all the time.) Arizona is going to challenge the touchdown.

The call is reversed. Steelers ball at the one.

9:45 – Jeff Reed makes it 3-0.

I just saw Gina Carano in a Pepsi commercial. She’s beautiful.

Who’s that handsome man with Gina?

7:50 – Kurt and Edge nearly fumbled the ball away on a draw on 1st and 20. Come on Kurt, you’ve been here before.

6:26 – The Cards were not on the same page as Warner tried to throw a short pass on 3rd and long. They definitely look like Super Bowl rookies so far.

3:58 – Big Ben looked one way, then he ran, then he looked another way, and ran. And then he completed a pass! However that played in your head, just use slow motion. That’s how it looked.

1:45 – Fast William just busted up the middle for 9 yards and the Steelers are doing whatever they want.

2nd Quarter

14:01 – Those of you who had Gary Russell scoring the first touchdown, you are happy. 10-0 Steelers.

11:15 – Edge James just took a nice swing pass for about 12 yards and the first down. The Steelers defense is over-pursuing a bit.

9:14 – Warner hit Boldin who went down the sideline for 44 yards on the first big play.

8:34 – If you had the Ben Patrick and Gary Russell two man parlay for first two touchdowns, you’d be a millionaire. 10-7 Steelers.

5:00 – The Cards defense finally held their own, though helped by some Steelers’ penalties.

4:16 – Steve Breaston just returned a punt for 35 yards, giving the Cardinals some really good field position to take the lead.

3:37 – Lamar Woodley sacked Kurt Warner and just hurt that great field position. He pulled off his jersey showing a t-shirt underneath that said, “I Hurt Kurt”.

(They kept moving backwards by the way and had to punt. Wasted opportunities.)

2:01 – The Cards caught a break. Tipped pass equals interception and they have some good field position.

(By the way, are we sure that’s Brenda Warner’s real hair? I’m not yet convinced. And that is in no way a diss at her. It just doesn’t look real to me.)

But it’s steal real to this guy, dammit!

1:14 – Mr. Hightower just took a pass from Warner went for a first down and the Cards are now cooking at the 25. Steve Harvey wants his name back.

:50 – Larry Fitz catches his first pass over the middle and the Cards are dealing at the 10 yard line.

:00 – James Harrison just picked off Warner in the end zone and returned it all the way for a touchdown. That might be the best defensive play in Super Bowl history.

3rd Quarter

I will just say that Bruce was at his friendliest, but also his corniest.

10:53 – Kurt was sacked and tried to throw the ball away, but the referee called it a fumble. Kurt is disappointing me. The call was overturned so it was only an incomplete pass. The Cards had to punt.

(Out of all the commercials so far, why is the one with the Rock my favorite of the day? Rock plus Storm Troopers equals ratings.)

8:14 – Smiling Hines Ward ran a short out for the first down. And when I say smiling, he was really smiling. Like eyes closed, dimples exposed, teeth showing.

5:10 – Fast William is quietly having a pretty good game. He just took a hand-off and got down to the five yard line.

3:32 – Reed chipped in a short field goal, but Adrian Wilson got called for running into the holder. He just kind of lost his balance and pushed him over. This is a weird game. First down Steelers.

(They didn’t get anywhere and had to kick the field goal anyway. 20-7 Steelers.)

The Coach and Miko dressed up for the game. Yes, I know, it’s boring. That’s why I’m trying to find interesting things to mention.

4th Quarter

13:43 – The Steelers are allowing short passes and making sure they are immediately wrapping up the Cardinals. Fitz has one catch. Boldin has 7, but at only 10 yards a pop. Warner is just dumping off to running backs. Cards had to punt again.

(Dice Clay and Hersh Walker on Celebrity Apprentice together? If Joan Rivers wasn’t on the show, it might be watchable.)

12:01 – Dockett sacked Big Benjamin and the Cards defense is keeping them in the game. The Cards have just over 12 minutes to make up two touchdowns.

10:45 – Warner just completed a pass to a guy named Urban. And he’s white.

9:50 – There’s been a JJ Arrington sighting. Warner hits him over the middle for a big play and the Cards are in business.

8:54 – Back to back passes to Larry Fitz and it’s first and goal at the 4 yard line.

7:33 – One yard fade to Larry Fitz and the Cards are back in the game. 20-14 Steelers.

6:39 – Dockett came up the middle and sacked Big Benjamin again. The Cards’ defense is playing well right now. But they may still need a turnover. Steelers couldn’t convert the 3rd down and the Cards have the ball again at their own 25 yard line.

5:05 – Ike Taylor pulled an Ike Turner and got a dumb penalty throwing a punch at Boldin after Boldin made a catch and went out of bounds.

4:27 – Warner to Breaston is good for a big play and they’re already in field goal position.

3:36 – After a holding penalty knocked them out of field goal position, Kurt missed three times in a row and they have to punt now. By the way, Brenda grabbed her hair in disgust and I saw roots. Maybe it is real.

2:58 – After completing a huge third down play from their own one yard line, the Steelers were called for holding in the end zone. Safety. Santonio “Spurs” Holmes made an awesome catch that went for naught. The Cards still need a touchdown. 20-16 Steelers.

2:48 – Three people in the room collectively asked, “Where’s Edge?” This must be a close game.

2:37 – Warner to Larry Fitz for about a 60 yard touchdown. He’s the best I’ve seen since Jerry. 23-20 Cardinals. Wow.

(If there’s one year where the Super Bowl could and should go to overtime, it’s this one. Donovan McNabb is still waiting for his turn.)

2:10 – Big Benjamin nearly got sacked, but he magically avoided it and completed the pass to set up one more play before the two minute warning. He got the play off but it was an incomplete pass.

1:50 – Benjamin completes a big third down play to Holmes and the Steelers are cooking.

Andrea Kramer says that Reed would be kicking into the wind.

:52 – Big Benjamin completes a huge pass to Holmes and they get down to the five yard line. This might be the greatest 4th quarter in Super Bowl history.

:35 – Big Benjamin throws it to Holmes in the end zone and his toes are in bounds for the TD. Wow! One of the greatest Super Bowl catches and throws of all time. 27-23 Steelers.

(Kurt has 29 seconds to go the entire field for the win.)

:22 – He hits Fitz for a 24 yard gain and they take the timeout.

:15 – Short pass to Arrington gets them on the Steelers’ side of the field, but they have to take another timeout.

:05 – The call on the field is a fumble by Warner, but they’re going to challenge the play to see if it’s really an incomplete pass.

:00 – Actually, they didn’t review it. Game blouses.

I can see how you could think that by the way I wrote it. What I meant was that the game was boring, thus I needed to find something else to talk about.

I was very suprised they didn’t review that play. The referees also missed the endzone celebration by Santonio Holmes after the touchdown (his LeBron celebration). I know I’m knitpicking but if the NFL really wants to cut down on the premeditated and coreographed celebrations they should enforce their rule in the biggest game watched by the most people. Who knows what 15 extra yards would have done for the Cardinals.

But great Super Bowl otherwise. Punctuated by the G.I. Joe commercial. I heard Zucko shriek with delight when Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes locked swords. YO JOE!

If you really want to look at where the refs failed, look back at the Harrison return and then tell me if you think there were any blocks in the back.

Is it me, or is that GI Joe trailer nothing like I would’ve ever imagined a GI Joe movie to be like?
